You may be eligible to bring an unannotated dictionary to the Mid-Term Test and Final Exam. This generally requires that you

  • Are in your first year of study, either full-time or part-time
  • Speak a language other than English at home
  • Have been one of:
    • educated in a country where English is not the first language; or
    • born outside Australia and arrived in Australia up to ten years prior to the date of application; or
    • born in Australia but before enrolling at ANU lived in a country where English is not the first language
  • are able to demonstrate a mix of both linguistic and cultural factors, which disadvantage you in timed assessment tasks such as exams or tests conducted in English
  • have evidence that they are undertaking formal English language training courses or are engaged in activities that can be expected would improve English language skills

You need to apply for this concession by sending an e-mail to CSS Academic Services, explaining your situation and providing evidence that you satisfy the above conditions.

If successful, you will receive a permission slip to use an unannotated dictionary for COMP1110.

For the mid-term test, you need to bring this permission slip along with your dictionary directly to the test, and notify an invigilator at the start of the exam.

For both the mid-term test and the final exam, you need to bring the permission slip and your dictionary to the Exams Office a few days before the exam (exact timing will be announced as the test/exam comes up). Your dictionary will then be checked and delivered to you at the exam.

For the mid-term test, you need to bring your dictionary to the Exams office by Thursday, 20/03/2025.
