Permission codes, crit-group registration, late enrolments, pre-requisites, the census date, and joining after week 1
Crit group registration#
Register for a studio crit group through MyTimetable before the start of week 2. The crits are the spine of the course — both the teaching and most of the assessment hang off them — so get into a group as soon as your enrolment comes through rather than leaving it. The first crit deliverable is due at your week 2 session’s cutoff, so week 1 is also when to get your environment set up.
Late enrolments#
Enrolling late costs you marks you cannot recover. The course moves fast, the studio dynamic depends on a stable cohort, and the assessment is weighted toward weekly crits, where catching up retroactively is impossible.
If you do join late, catching up is your responsibility. We will not re-run lectures, re-do crits, or compress the early weeks for your benefit. Crits you missed because you weren’t yet enrolled cannot be re-marked — the contribution mark for those weeks is lost, and the same applies to any assessment whose deadline has already passed.
If you’re considering enrolling after teaching has started, talk to the convenor before you commit. We’d rather have an honest conversation in week 1 than an extension request in week 4.
Census and dropping the course#
The course is front-loaded so you can make an informed decision before census. Assignment 1 lands early, and its marks and feedback are returned before the 31 August census date — so you’ll have a real mark in hand, plus several weeks of crits behind you, before the last day to drop the course without academic or financial penalty.
After census the fees are locked in, but your record isn’t: drop on or before 9 October and the course shows as a withdrawal rather than a fail. Both dates are marked on the timeline on the home page.
Pre-requisites and permission codes#
Because this is a new course, every enrolment needs a permission code — apply through ANU’s permission code application, even if you satisfy the pre-requisites. If you’ve completed the pre-requisite (COMP3900 for COMP4020, COMP6390 for COMP8020), say so in your application and you’ll get straight in.
If you haven’t done the pre-requisite but have completed another 3000- or 4000-level COMP course (6000- or 8000-level for COMP8020), you may still be eligible — explain in your application why you think you satisfy the pre-requisites and it will be assessed case-by-case. One heads-up: the lectures and assessments assume some knowledge from the pre-req courses, so you may need to pick up a few things as we go.
