# COMP4350/8350 --- Sound and Music Computing > Course website for COMP4350/COMP8350 Sound and Music Computing at the ANU School of Computing: lectures, weekly workshops, assessments and resources for a collaborative course on creating sound and performing music with computers. COMP4350/8350 is a course at the ANU School of Computing, Australian National University, that introduces the fundamental concepts of music computing: digital synthesis, algorithmic composition and musical interface design. Students build computer musical instruments in music programming languages (Pure Data, live-coding environments) and create new computer music works to perform in concert with an ensemble of other students. The course is open to computing students and to students from creative arts and other areas who meet the prerequisites. The course next runs in Semester 1, 2027. Dates, template repositories and forum links on this site refer to that offering. The catalogue entry is at https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2027/course/COMP4350. Course convenor: Dr Charles Martin, charles.martin@anu.edu.au. ## Pages - [Sound and Music Computing](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/): A collaborative course in making sound and creating music with computers - [Page Not Found (404)](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/404/): This page does not exist on the COMP4350/8350 Sound and Music Computing course website. - [Assessments](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/assessments/): Portfolios and performances that you submit. - [Computer music diary](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/assessments/diary/): Develop your skills and discuss in class. - [LENS Performance](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/assessments/lens-performance/): Now's the time to make some noise. - [Portfolio (1 and 2)](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/assessments/portfolio/): Time to reflect on what you have made. - [Solo Performance](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/assessments/solo-performance/): Create some music in your bedroom. - [Supplementary Assessment](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/assessments/supplementary/): Live coding music from a blank screen - [Lectorials](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/): Interactive sessions with the whole class together. - [Course Intro](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/00-intro/): Who, what, and why. - [Digital Sound and Synthesis](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/01-digital-sound-and-synthesis/): First steps in making sound with computers. - [Audio files and sampling](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/02-sampling/) - [Envelopes, Notes and Compositions](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/03-notes-compositions/): Abstractions from sound to music. - [Network Music Making](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/04-networks/): Connecting computer musicians together. - [Musical Interfaces](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/05-interfaces/): Controlling computer instruments - [Algorithmic Composition](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/06-algocomp/): Programs to compose for you. - [Live Coding](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/07-live-coding/): Programming as performance - [Advanced Synth Design](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/08-synth2/): Getting deeper into sutractive and modulation synthesis - [Making Hardware Interfaces](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/09-hardware-interfaces/): Creating physical computer instruments - [Performing Computer Music](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/10-performing/): Techniques and technology for staging SMC - [Interfaces and Expression](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/11-expression/): Not what to do, but how to do it. - [Composing and Improvising](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/lectures/12-composing/): How make music for your concert - [Policies](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/policies/): Course policies for COMP4350/8350 Sound and Music Computing, covering official class summaries, code of conduct, laptop requirements, and assessment rules. - [Resources](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/resources/): Tools, tips, and further reading. - [Bibliography](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/resources/bibliography/): Textbooks, resources, and further reading. - [FAQ](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/resources/faq/): Some questions which come up, well... frequently - [Tools](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/resources/tools/): The software and hardware tools you need to take part in SMC. - [Workshops](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/workshops/): Small group classes for collaboration and critique. - [Week 1: hello sine](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/workshops/01-hello-sine/): Your first beeps and boops - [Week 2: digital synthesis](https://comp.anu.edu.au/courses/comp4350/workshops/02-synthesis-1/): So what types of beeps and boops can we make, actually?
