Artificial photosynthesis mimics nature’s 2 billion year old invention, natural photosynthesis. Natural photosynthesis generates oxygen and organic materials from CO2 and water by utilising sunlight as an energy source. Likewise, artificial photosynthesis generates oxygen and clean fuel (H2-gas) or organic materials from CO2 and water by utilising sunlight. Certain nanomaterials are very good at inducing natural photosynthesis due to their high surface area. This project has the following two sub-themes:
- Carbon-free energy production: Solar-water splitting for the generation of clean H2-gas fuel
This project will develop novel nanomaterials to generate H2-gas from water.
- Carbon negative emission: CO2 capture and conversion
This project will develop novel nanomaterials to selectively capture CO2 gas from atmosphere and to convert CO2 into useful materials with help from sunlight.
