Smart recycling of materials 

The production of materials is the biggest drain on our planet. From mining, energy use, and then waste buildup.

Have you ever wondered how useful trash is thrown away each day? Do you feel like it should be part of a circular system? Do you feel as though the proliferation of new primary materials is senseless?

In this project, students will be encouraged to think big, and explore the circularity of materials. There are a number of projects that sit beneath this description, most of which are 'hands on' and required liason with the MakerSpace and Engineering workshop.

All materials classes are being explored for their recyclability, and being explored in processes that add value to the waste. i.e. 

Glass:  The production of glass filament from glass waste, which can be used for 3D printing

Alloys:  The use of computational tools to develop (and make) useful alloys from waste feedstock

Polymers:  Shred, blend, and make!  Either producing filament  for 3D printing, or using a press / molder, to create new from old

 

Goals

Collect, sort, process, and value add. You will turn on persons trash into another persons treasure.

 

Requirements

The project will involve coordinating with people and will also involve manual manufacturing and product making.
