Department of Industry, Science and Resources business.gov.au

The Department of Industry, Science and Resources, Commercialisation division delivers a range of programs focused on encouraging business research, development and commercialisation. Through the programs the division interacts with startup and scaling businesses, investors and other governments and agencies.

The Venture Capital team, within the Commercialisation Division, manages nine tax-concession and co-investment venture capital programs, including early stage venture capital limited partnerships (ESVCLP) and the Biomedical Translation Fund (BTF). Venture capital provides finance for businesses at early stages of growth with high commercial potential to expand and build better, more sustainable and competitive businesses into the future. This creates value not only for the businesses being invested in, but also for the investors backing venture capital funds.

We employ a bottom-up approach to innovation by embedding technical specialists within the business team. These specialists have helped the team move away from managing data held in multiple spreadsheets to data in a SQL database with an automated load process and a Power BI system for analytics.

The benefits of digitisation have been immeasurable. The team now have access to up to date data with on demand reports for analytics, compliance and operational purposes. This means, for example, the team can showcase the achievements of the programs : a total 17,500 participants of the Venture Capital Act 2002 programs have invested $32.81 billion, half of which has come from foreign investors. The economy has benefitted through $17.79 billion invested into Australian businesses.

The team won the DTA Government Digital Award in 2019 for Outstanding digital delivery : emerging technology for their work in digitising delivery.

Please visit the business.gov.au website for further information on the programs.
