Project Overview#

The viscosity of Earth’s mantle controls the rate and pattern of mantle convection, the gravitational potential, and dictates the rate at which Earth’s surface rebounds in response to glacial-isostatic adjustment, impacting long term sea levels.

In this project, we would like to apply Bayesian inference jointly with complementary surface observations to develop a radial model of the density and viscosity of the Earth’s mantle. This project involves using codes in an HPC environment and applying them in a new scientific avenue of research. It will involve collaborative work between the School of Computing and the Research School of Earth Sciences.

  • Ideally suited to a summer scholar interested in scientific computation
