Research

I have a broad interest in computer vision and machine learning, with a particular focus on generative AI. My current research topics include image, video, and audio generation and editing; explainable model adaptation and generalization; out-of-distribution detection and anomaly detection; and adversarial attacks and defenses. I am always looking for highly motivated students with strong coding skills who are interested in conducting research with me. If you are interested in project supervision or pursuing a PhD under my guidance, please email me to arrange a discussion.

Biography

I am a Lecturer in the School of Computing at the Australian National University (ANU). Previously, I was a Research Fellow at ANU from 2021 to 2022, supervised by Nick Barnes. I earned my PhD from ANU in 2021, focusing on salient object detection under the supervision of Nick Barnes, Mehrtash Harandi, Yuchao Dai, and Richard Hartley. Before that, I received my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Northwestern Polytechnical University in 2007 and 2010, respectively.

Tutorial Organisation:

  • Co-organiser of and speaker at the tutorial on salient object detection at ACCV 2019 with Nick Barnes.
  • Co-organiser of and speaker at the tutorial on uncertainty estimation at ICCV 2021 with Nick Barnes.

Conference and Journal Reviewer

I have regularly served as program committee member or reviewer for the following conferences and journals: Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV), European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV), AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TPAMI), Pattern Recognition (PR); Transactions on Image Processing (TIP), International Journal of Computer Vision (IJCV), among others.

Supervision

I’m supervising (as primary supervisor) 4 PhD students from the Australian National University.

Teaching:

  • COMP8536: Advanced Topics in Computer Vision (Semester 2, 2024) with Miaomiao Liu.
  • ENGN4528/6528: Computer Vision (Semester 1, 2025) with Dylan Campbell.

Awards:

  • Paper Award Nominees. For Jing Zhang, Deng-Ping Fan, Yuchao Dai, Saeed Anwar, Fatemeh Sadat Saleh, Tong Zhang and Nick Barnes, CVPR 2020, “UC-Net: Uncertainty Inspired RGB-D Saliency Detection via Conditional Variational Autoencoders”
