Project

Data Science Section Horizon Scanning Project

The Data Science Section is running a proof of concept Horizon Scanning project designed to enable the early detection and monitoring of global developments related to respiratory disease, providing critical insights. By leveraging advanced AI technologies, this project aims to automate the collection and evaluation of large volumes of information, offering real-time assessments of respiratory disease risks to Australia. The tool will be customised to the specific needs of the department, and importantly, this approach can be expanded to cover additional communicable diseases and health risks beyond respiratory disease.

The project will be executed in a phased, milestone-based approach, allowing for continuous feedback and refinement to meet the evolving needs of our users.

The role of the intern is to work with a team participating in project sprints, and will be able to contribute to method development and execution.

The intern will also assist with data wrangling, documentation, write up various analytical reports that summarise key findings. The intern will be working with aggregated data csv files which needs to be converted into relevant charts and tables using Excel/Python/R. Each set of visualisations needs to be accompanied by a discussion of results, key findings, and recommendations.

Required/Preferred technical skills

Required:

• Computer programming eg Python, R, SAS or SQL

• Data wrangling / engineering

• Data visualisation eg Tableau, Power BI, Qlik, Python, R

• Machine learning/artificial intelligence

Desirable:

• Quantitative background (eg mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, epidemiology)

• Written communication skills, especially report writing

• Experience in scientific literature reviews

• Oral communication skills eg presentations

Special Requirements

• Intern requires Australian citizenship

The intern will be required to obtain Baseline security clearance, sponsored by the organisation.

In-person/Hybrid.

Type of internship

Paid internship. The intern/s will be engaged as a casual employee.
