NatureHelm is an emerging startup that is creating a location-specific biodiversity data platform that empowers corporations and their global supply chains to quickly comprehend, monitor and fulfill biodiversity reporting needs.

To achieve this, NatureHelm is harnessing a wealth of global data that requires assessment and integration to reveal insightful guidance for our platform users as they navigate their biodiversity journey: Locate - Evaluate - Assess - Report.

Data Source Attribution Internship

Project Description

As the quantity and diversity of datasets utilised by NatureHelm continue to grow, so to do the complexities of managing their licensing agreements and attribution requirements. This internship project aims to improve the transparency and compliance of our data platform by systematically collecting, documenting, and attributing all utilized data sources. The intern will review the current practices for data provenance tracking and, where necessary, extend or refine them to ensure greater accuracy, efficiency, and scalability. They will research industry best practices, compile citations, and develop a user/client-specific attribution page within the platform to ensure that all data providers are clearly and appropriately acknowledged. This project will provide the intern with valuable hands-on experience in data governance, licensing compliance, and software implementation—ultimately enhancing the credibility, reproducibility, and trustworthiness of data-driven decisions on the platform.

With increasing demand for skilled professionals in data science and data engineering, this internship offers the student industry experience using widely adopted tools and methodologies, particularly in the area of data governance. They will gain exposure to the full data lifecycle, from raw data ingestion to the creation of detailed, contextually accurate attributions, developing a deep understanding of how to manage data with transparency and compliance at scale.

Required/Preferred Technical Skills:

Ideally, these projects would suit a 2nd or 3rd year student of computer science/data science related degrees with sound experience developing scripts and applications in Python and SQL.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with data and databases
  • Experience in JavaScript/TypeScript, possibly React
  • Interest and experience with Geospatial Data
  • Interest and experience in Cloud Services (AWS)

Required/Preferred Professional Skills:

Time management, communication skills, professional and collaborative acumen.

Special Requirements:

The intern requires Australian citizenship or a visa with working rights in Australia.

Type of Internship:

Hybrid (can be remote or in-person).

The internship will be paid. The intern/s will be engaged as a casual employee
